Texarkana is known for its rich history, Southern charm and Wild West spirit! It boasts a mixture of architectural and historical treasures; scenic beauty and amenities that make it a unique metropolitan area with a vibrant future. It is highlighted by a broadly diversified industrial base. Manufacturing has also shown steady growth here during the last 40 years.

Before the arrival of Europeans, the territory around what is now Texarkana held the Great Southwest Trail which was the main travel line between the Indian villages of the Mississippi Valley and those of the West and Southwest. The first white settlers came to the area surrounding future Texarkana as early as 1840. Railroads were quick to see the possibilities of this vast new territory in the late 1850s.

Among the pioneer railroads was the Texas and Pacific, which stretched its tracks across Texas to the Arkansas line. It was logical that the point where these 2 railroads met would be ideal for a city.

As such, the Texas and Pacific Railroad sold the first town lots on December 8, 1873. It's not officially known who gave Texarkana its name. One popular version credits Colonel Gus Knobel who, while surveying the construction of the Iron Mountain Railroad from Little Rock to our site, came to the state line, wrote the name "TEX-ARK-ANA" on a board and nailed it to a tree. He believed that the Louisiana border was just a few miles to the south (actually it is only 25), and therefore Colonel Knobel derived the city's title from TEXas, ARKansas and LouisiANA.
